New Fic, plus Introduction: Forged from the Pyre

April 28th, 2008 (07:34 pm)

where i am: chilling with Flurry & Dempsey
how i am: chipper
accompanied by: Flurry chewing on an effin' sock!

Introduction: Two gorgeous, estranged and motherless brothers: one, a strong-willed, well-mannered college educated thinker; the other, as cocky as he is lethal, a highly skilled fighter, educated in the school of hard knocks and forced to grow up way too fast. United in their seemingly harsh taskmaster of a father's cause, learning to work together as they ready themselves for a fight that could kill them all.
Why the intro, you ask, when any of you reading this already know the history of the Winchesters?
Simple. Because I'm not talking about the Winchesters. I'm talking about the Lancers. Scott & Johnny to be precise ;).

Johnny Madrid Lancer                     Scott Lancer

 Classic late 60s Western formula...
Wounded little brothers and protective big brothers  \o/  \o/  \o/

Scott and Johnny and Barranca, Johnny's "Metallicar" *g*

Sorry about the teaser, guys, but I couldn't resist *g*. Some of you have seen my thoughts on the parallels between the Winchesters and Lancers before. For those of you who haven't, my description above really is talking about the Lancer boys and not Sam and Dean. To me, the parallels are so strong that I can't help but wonder sometimes if Kripke was influenced without even knowing it.
For anyone still reading this *g*, I strongly encourage you to watch this YouTube Lancer video linked below. It shows clips of the brothers' introduction and their initial distaste for each other, and then lots of scenes portraying their eventual warm, affectionate brotherly relationship. The quality of these old clips is sadly quite poor but, for anyone who likes brotherly hurt/comfort, adoration and affection, this really is worth the watch, whether you "know" Scott and Johnny or not:

JMLLover's Lancer video

For the uninitiated, Lancer was a Western series, set in the 1870's, broadcast on CBS between 1968 and 1970. Unlike our Winchesters, Scott & Johnny Lancer were half-brothers… Scott's mother died immediately following his birth and he was raised in Boston (and Harvard educated no less) by his wealthy maternal grandfather. Johnny, OTOH, was stolen away from his home as a toddler by his adulteress mother and ultimately forced to grow up on the streets of the Mexican-American border towns, eventually earning his keep and a legendary reputation as one of the fastest guns in the west. The boys meet for the first time in the series pilot, having never even known of each others existence but both having been paid handsomely by their estranged rancher father - Murdoch Lancer - to meet with him, also for the first time (that they recall). The meeting is filled with animosity and bitterness thanks to Scott not knowing that his grandfather is the reason behind Murdoch having never sought custody of him (revealed to the viewers in a later episode) and thanks to Johnny's mother's lies about them both having been kicked out of their home by Murdoch. Despite the animosity, Murdoch's offer of an equal partnership in his massive holdings (if the boys stay and help fight off the murderous "land pirates" trying to take over his land) is accepted by both Johnny and Scott and hence the story of the 3 Lancer men trying become family begins.
Like Sam and Dean, Scott and Johnny are very different individuals but a bond grows quite quickly between them and, as you can see in the video clips, wonderful brotherly moments abound. The kind of moments and demonstrations of affection we'd love to see more of in SPN… sigh.
Lancer was my second fandom, though I never actually participated in it aside from reading tons of quality fic and discussing eps with two fandom friends from my Mag7 days (Jennie and PenKatt). And though the Winchester boys have definitely stepped to the forefront of my fangirl obsessions, Johnny and Scott Lancer will always hold a very special place in my heart.
The first of my Lancer tapes arrived on my doorstop during an awful time in my life, while my mother was losing her short-lived battle with cancer. After her loss, thanks to Jennie and PenKatt's thoughtfulness and understanding of me, I was able to immerse myself in the glorious brotherly angst and hurt/comfort that was Lancer, along with the gorgeous scenery provided by the landscape, Lancer hacienda, the horses, and most especially the Lancer brothers. No doubt it was a vulnerable time for me and I fell for them. Hard. Though I successfully resisted the still popular Lancer communities, I couldn't resist reading the fanfic and in November 2005 I succumbed and started writing a collaborative, epic Lancer fic with my longtime Mag7 beta and dear friend, PenKatt. Unfortunately, quite far along into the story, RL and writers block sidelined us both (not to mention my completely unexpected dalliance and subsequent total and complete obsession for the Winchesters) but, ultimately we decided to buckle down and finish our story. We finished posting it to the 500 plus member strong Lancer Writers community at the end of March and it is now uploaded on their archive page. Though I'd love for a few of you to give it a try, I recognize that the likelihood is slim so I'm not going to post the story here, rather just post its link which can be found here:
And so, now that I have put this baby to bed, I am hoping that my Supernatural muse will come back and visit for a while ;).
For more information on the wonderful world of Lancer, here are a few links I recommend:

Can't wait to read the story.

**Jumping up and down with glee**

I just *love* finding other Lancer fans!! LOL

There are a few of us in the SPN fandom, fic-writers included. I'd love to see more of them over here in SPN-land if they're not writing Lancer anymore. Clearly many are still writing Lancer though. I get dozens of email prompts per day of new stories or story parts being posted. It's almost mind boggling.

Katt, my co-writer, is a Scott-girl so both boys get equal angst, h/c, and attention in our story but I think there's plenty of Johnny to keep you entertained if you do decide to give this story a whirl.

It was a real treat hearing from another Johnny fan. I've been watching Lancer clips on YouTube on and off all night... he still melts my heart :).

I adored Lancer, although I was a Scott fan. Thanks for the pointers to the websites.

Lancer Bros

I *do* love Scott, was crazy about Wayne Maunder and, in my youth, Scott was my man. I also loved Wayne in the short-lived cop show he was in following Lancer, called Chase.

Johnny hit me deepest this time around but I'm a sucker for brothers who adore each other so could never *not* love them both :). If you decide to give my story a try (don't feel obliged to, though), you'll see that Scott gets equal attention, especially since my co-writer is a Scott-girl *g*. Truthfully though, some of my favorite parts of the story are ones I wrote for Scott, so he definitely doesn't get short-changed.

I hope you have fun perusing the websites and, if you do delve into the fic, I strongly recommend Kate's stories, found in the archive I linked to or here: http://www.womenwritersblock.com/katel.htm and Cindy Carrier (our beta for our Lancer fic) whose stories link is here: http://www.peterbrown.tv/lancercindy.html

Both write fantastic "brothers" stories and are slanted toward Scott.

Hi. Your introduction intrigued me, so I've just read Forged from the Pyre and really enjoyed it. Great story.
I don't actually know Lancer (maybe it wasn't shown in the UK. It definitely looks like the sort of thing I would have loved), but I still enjoyed it. I obviously have a thing for brothers - I got into Supernatural via Thunderbirds believe it or not (and I'm talking the puppet version not the movie remake!)
I liked the similarities between Dean and Johnny, but Johnny being the younger gave it an added twist. Thanks

Boys Legs

You have no idea how thrilled I am to read this! It's not that I want to convert any SPN fans from SPN to Lancer but I *did* want to share in the glee that is Lancer as well as demonstrate the similarities I find between both sets of brothers.

I too am a sucker for brothers or brotherly duos and have been known to dabble in reading fic based on shows I've never watched so I definitely know from where you speak ;).

Thank-you though for taking the time to read Katt's and my Lancer fic. It's a helluva commitment to make to read through simply by virtue of its size, so I'm delighted you both read it and enjoyed it. Thanks too for letting me know that you did both :).

I just discovered your post. I love both Supernatural and Lancer

I think it is because of the brother thing and that Johnny and Dean are so similar even thought like you said Dean is the older brother in Supernatural but they are both so alike. Margie

Re: Lancer
Lancer Bros

In my youth I was a Scott girl (loved Wayne Maunder! Still do ♥) but when I rekindled my love for the show back in 2005 (OMG, it's been almost 10 years exactly!), my leanings tilted a little more in Johnny's favor. Either way, I loved the best together!

So awesome to hear from a fellow Lancer fan!
