Hubby's early Christmas, plus a Supernatural moment

December 14th, 2008 (11:06 pm)

where i am: with Flurry & Dempsey
how i am: giddy
accompanied by: Hubster's snores

Christmas (and perhaps the next 10!) has come a little early for the spousal unit and, as a part of the story behind this, I have a Supernatural moment to share...
First though, meet the truck that, since yesterday, has taken up residence next to my van in our driveway:

Me thinks John Winchester might approve ;).

Since the hubster is awfully handy with a wrench and we've always used my vehicles as the nicer ones to run around in, hubby's been driving beaters to get him to and from work for years. But, this year we'd decided that, with over 250,000 miles (+400,000 km) on his 10 year old Sonoma, and my van loan due to be paid off in August, we'd be in a position to buy him something decent this time, possibly even new.

Well, you know what they say about best laid plans… between that and Murphy's Law, we should've known the Sonoma would crap out before we were ready.

So, on the 4th, the Sonoma crapped out big-time and, after getting a repair estimate of over $3,000.00 (damn near as much as we've paid for some of hubby's past beaters), we decided we'd still go forward with our plans, even if that means finances are going to be scary tight until the summer when that van loan goes bye-bye.

The disadvantage of having to car hunt when you are in dire need is you don't have the luxury of being able to wait for the right one to come along. So, instead of doing Christmas shopping/prepping as had been planned for this past week, we've spent all our spare and not-so-spare time looking at trucks and, in the end, decided to work out the math on a new one that a dealer had about 5 hours north of us. Alas, after going home to research further and calling the next day to say "yes", it had already been sold :(.

So, with both of us wearing ridiculously long faces as we signed on the dotted line, we settled for second best and brought it home yesterday after it spent a few days getting rust-proofed, undercoated (welcome to Canada), and having a spray-on liner installed to protect the bed.

Why the long faces? Other than because we forget how spoiled and lucky we are sometimes. Because, after looking all over the country for another just right truck, we couldn't find one. It simply didn't exist. Not with the desired engine or tow/haul capacity, or cab size, or box size, or seat configuration, etc., anyway. And when you're making the most significant purchase you've made in nearly 20 years and still have to compromise, that does tend to feel a little off.

Truthfully, aside from the truck's impractical color (black truck + white dogs = ugh), I prefer this one. It's not as big as the one up north had been (18 inches shorter in box length) so, in reality, my long face was more of a sympathetic one… sad that my hubby wasn't as thrilled as he should be.

You know what trumped that sympathy though? And where my Supernatural moment finally (yeah, I know, it's about damn time) comes into this story? It's because when I was driving away from the dealership after giving them our down payment, I started thinking about the truck and realized what we'd just bought…

A black, GMC Sierra 4 x 4…

Ring any bells?

Truckzilla, Sr.                                                                            Truckzilla, Jr.

And when that thought hit me, I started grinning from ear to ear and couldn't stop! Hell, I still can't *g*. I swear, if hubby could, he'd back out of the deal and buy a pink Toyota, just to spite me because of my stoopid, giddy gleefulness. Party pooper that he is though, he adamantly will not agree to personalized plates saying "Zilla" or any other incarnation of the name *g*.

I am such a John girl sometimes (LOL)!

Okay, so it's a lot shinier at the moment than the 28 years its senior predecessor but, trust me, Junior's bad-ass too and will be put through its paces: working construction, going hunting (birds, if not supernatural things), and will travel many, many miles (including across both the American and Canadian midwest), so I feel fully justified in calling it 'Zilla ;).

Oh, as for hubby's long face? He's driven the beast a number of times now since bringing it home, so that face has morphed into the gleeful grin of a boy man with a brand new, powerful toy truck *G*

Merry early Christmas, hubby {{smooches}}.

Hey, maybe you can find a '67 Impala for me *G*!!

Isn't it pretty?

I'm such a fangirl though... just the concept of driving what John drove (even if it's a newer version) has boosted my spirits *g* {{blush}}

ROFLOL!!! I think the Spousal Unit agrees with your hubby about the pink Toyota. But man, I'd be laughing with glee, too. Papa John would be proud of you.

We've known since this version of the truck came out in 2007 that this (the Silverado or Sierra) was the type of truck we wanted. It's got a terrific new engine (better fuel economy and better for the environment without being a full fledged hybrid). Never in all that time did the Truckzilla connection occur to me... until driving away from the dealership. Had we not gotten stuck with this black one, it might never have. Still, it's amusing me to no end. I really am a goof some times ;).

Oh, that's awesome. Did you Photoshop in that Zilla front plate? You have some strong subliminal mojo pulling that one off.

Thanks! :)

LOL, and yeah, rather than just fuzzing out both shots of the plate, I decided to play with the one. I couldn't resist and used picnik's free site which did the trick ;).

I love the new truck! I feel bad that you had to go for it so soon though. The best laid plans and all that-it never fails! That happened to me with the tranny back in July and I was not thrilled-lol. But the truck looks awesome! Have fun with it!!!

Thank-you, I ♥ the truck too and it's definitely grown on hubby which pleases me. Before long he'll forget about the one that got away ;)

I ditto that *g*

But, better the truck bouncing over construction sites than Dean's baby ;)
