Dyna Update (all is status quo)

January 19th, 2009 (11:31 am)
tired

where i am: with Coop and Flurry
how i am: tired
accompanied by: Mellencamp, Small Town

Hey, there. Just a quick update for those of you in the know and a bit of a RL summary for those who aren't...

A week ago yesterday, Dyna hurt her eye, likely from rummaging in burrows 'n such while out hiking in the deep woods with hubster and friends. Though we irrigated her eye with saline after the hike (a norm with terriers) and treated it with a mild antibiotic lubricant too, a nasty infection has resulted from the scratch and we're in a race to save her eye.

And with eyes like these, I *really* don't want to lose one...

Since the diagnosis on Wednesday of a "melting ulcer" (think of it as a mini crater on the cornea and an infection speedily trying to melt its way down into the eye's deepest parts), one of us has been home with her. Hubby took Wednesday and Thursday off work and I took Friday off and am home today. We have to administer heavy duty antibiotic drops every 2 hours around the clock plus a drop of her own blood plasma 3 times daily into the eye in hopes of stopping the infection. We are also taking her into the vet every couple days for checkups, plus to draw blood for the serum and, so far, at least after Friday's appointment, our vet thinks we're winning the battle. I have another appointment 6:30 tonight to see if the eye's still improving.

Due to the merger/take-over we're in the middle of, this is a really bad time for me to be away from work and I've spent this morning on the phone with work, our building landlord, and two vendors/suppliers dealing with crisis control. I'll take tomorrow off if I have to... not sure yet how to deal with Wednesday or beyond yet if we still have to maintain the every 2 hour drill. Hubby may be able to swing another day this week, though, in his line of work, no work = no pay so it's better for us if I take paid vacation days off, especially when its unplanned like this. I may consider smuggling Dyna into work but there are a number of obstacles with that: 1) no dogs allowed in the building 2) new co-worker is afraid of dogs 3) new boss 4) I'm on the 7th floor in a concrete jungle for potty breaks 5) there's another foot of snowfall since the weekend and it's damn cold outside for office attire dog walks...

We'll see how it goes. Wish us luck!

So, despite the fact that I'm home and on the computer, I'm damn tired and therefore not very "talkative" or coherent at this point. I am reading fic and my flist page but aren't giving you all the attention or feedback you deserve. So sorry, guys!

On a positive note or two, we did see new BOYS last week \o/ and will see more of them this week \o/ and I also got to see Jensen on the big screen, Jeff in the Watchmen trailer, and Jared in the Friday the 13th trailer... a Winchester trifecta \o/ \o/ \o/ *G*

Oh, thank you for the update! I've been busy, but keeping an eye out for news from you. The lack of news was worrying, so it's doubly good to hear that you are at this point winning the race.

*g* about the trifecta. There were several Watchmen ads during the playoffs yesterday. I did my best not to drool TOO badly during them. We are such sad fangirls. It's wonderful, isn't it?

Thank-you, lady. I'm glad the eye is doing better but this schedule is mind-numbing. Though I did buzz through a couple of Dark Angel eps and watched Berrisford Agenda in its entirety last night. Alec's angst brought me to welling tears (exhaustion was no doubt a contributing factor *g*) and yet it was still refreshingly different from Dean's angst ;)

Just heard from hubby and he doubts he'll make it home in time to drive Dyna to her vet appointment which is now giving me more stress. He is fearless when it comes to winter driving, actually enjoys it, and I am the polar opposite (no pun intended). This vet is 40 mins away on a good day and the roads will likely be really, really ugly with streamers and drifting. Not to mention me making a late appointment to help get hubby home in time to do the duty so now, if he can't make it, I get to do the drive in the dark too. Ugh. I know he'll do his damnedest to make it but, because I'm such a coward and will want to hit the road very early to ensure I can take it slow, I'll likely be on the road with her even if he does get home "in time".

Don't mind my whining... I get that way when I'm in need of sleep ;)

Ack!!

Sending healing energy Dyna's way, and much positive energy in your way and your hubby's. Take care, and we'll be thinking about you all.:)

Thanks muchly... I appreciate truly the good thoughts.

And I think I owe you feedback for Epilogos? Do I? See, this is the state I'm in! I just loved it -- the letters, the use of canon, *everything* (LOL)

I hope you have plans for more stories in this A/R ?! ;)

Oh noes! ;(((
I didn't see that post so this was a shock to see just now. I really hope everything works out for you-and her eye can be saved. That is seriously scary. Poor girl. ;(((
And losing work for this kind of emergency is sucky I know. But I commend you both for doing this-despite the obstacles in from of you. Keep us all posted ok? When you can I mean-as I realize you all have to be flat out exhausted.
On a positive note-I am so glad you got to see MBV! I know you were stressing about getting to! I have seen it myself-and in 3D as well as. *YAY* It was gross-and totally fun! I was able to see Jared's trailer-but they never showed Jeff's movie trailer-huh. :(
*Hugs you*

Jensen and Jared Clutch

Thanks, girl. You didn't miss any entries, this just came up in convo with some of my flisters so I thought I'd update everyone with this one entry ;)

Just heard from hubby and he doubts he'll make it home in time to drive Dyna to her vet appointment which is now giving me more stress. He is fearless when it comes to winter driving, actually enjoys it, and I am the polar opposite (no pun intended). I know he'll do his damnedest to make it but, because I'm such a coward and will want to hit the road very early to ensure I can take it slow, I'll likely be on the road with her even if he does get home "in time". ::sniff::

I'm really glad you enjoyed MBV. I came away disappointed which is another reason I didn't post about it. I had hoped Jensen would've been given the material to really shine but felt the script limited him. Yeah, I know it was just a slasher fic but still hoped he could elevate the role. Instead, I felt the script really limited/restricted him. I did have fun, no doubt about it... just wish it had been... more? I guess.

Thanks for the hugs and good thoughts. I will update again once we know something more concrete {{hugs}}

I was sure I had-I know I lose alot of entries due to sheer volume of my friends list-and I thought I'd missed this!
As I am replying late-how is she? How did the vet visit go the other night? *Hopes she is ok*

We've eased back to doses every 6 hours so we're on our way to leading a normal life again. I'm at home now, heading out for work around 11:00, once I give Dyna her next dose, work until 5-5:30 and then come home for the next dose. Tomorrow we'll stretch it longer so I'll almost work a full day. Back to the vet Saturday to see if we keep administering the drugs or finally call it a win. Wish us luck! And thanks :)

That sounds awesome! You're winning the battle then! I'm so relieved to hear this! Soon it will all be behind you and you can all get back to normal-yay!
Good news is always welcome!

Thank-you, sweetie. She's feeling better so I do have my hopes up. Just hope the end result is good because, if it's not, I'll be so damn tired, blithering and bawling to the extreme will likely be my response even if logically I know things could be worse {{hugs you}}

Of course now I'm probably facing a miserable drive to this vet today... this vet is 40 mins away on a good day and the roads will likely be really, really ugly with streamers and drifting thanks to a major snowfall yesterday. Not to mention me making a late appointment to help get hubby home in time to do the duty since he's fearless in weather. So now, if he can't make it (and he's just called to say he probably can't), I get to do the drive in the dark too. Ugh. I know he'll do his damnedest to get home in time but, because I'm such a coward and will want to hit the road very early to ensure I can take it slow, I'll likely be on the road with her even if he does get home "in time".

Thanks for listening to my whining. Hugs to your critters from me and mine.

Thanks for the update! I have never heard of such a thing. The "melting ulcer" sounds horrific. However, it seems like you may have caught it and that is a good thing. You would think that sneaking your dog in might work, but I have a co-worker who is afraid of anything animal and if I brought my dog in she would not come in the office! I hope your co-worker is not that bad!

I hope everything works out.

Jensen Prayer Hands

This is actually our second experience with a melting ulcer - the first was with Tucker, pushing 10 years ago. He came in from our backyard blinking one day and days later, in profile, the eye looked like a nearly bursting balloon and in fact was literally close to popping! In his case we spent big $ on a corneal graft which saved the eye but not his vision and, since that eye gave him trouble in his last few years (swelling), it's not something we're considering for Dyna this time around. We also didn't have the blood plasma treatment back then... it's a fairly new concept that seems to be working very well.

I don't think Russells have a genetic predisposition toward these melting ulcers but, because they're so hard on themselves and have so much drive, getting jabbed or scratched in the eye doesn't hold them back at all when they're rummaging around in hunt-mode so they cause more damage by driving dirt in there deeply or worsening the injury without acting like they've been hurt. Hell, that's how I missed Flurry having totally dislocated her hip a few years ago. Sure, she was acting lame (though not like she was in serious pain?!), but that didn't stop her from spinning in circles to join the rest of the gang on a run! When she was still lame (but still spinning) 8 hours later, we took her into the vet and got the shocking news!

I don't know how freaked my co-worker would be with Dyna coming into the office? I don't know her very well since she's come along as part of this merger we're going through. I think she'd be okay since Dyna is so tiny and could stay in my office, but navigating our very busy building/lobbies with Dyna to just get in and out of it would not be easy. There are security guards and cameras everywhere. Depending on the news I get at tonight's appointment (heading there shortly), I'll talk to my boss and see about sneaking her into work Wednesday, if necessary. There are enough people at work tomorrow to cover for me if need be so, even if I don't *have* to stay home, I will, to catch up on some sleep if nothing else. Wednesday though, I really need to be there. Or should be anyway.

Thanks for the good wishes!

Things are looking up and I'll likely post another entry after her next vet visit, later this week. After today's appointment, the vet is very pleased and, as of tonight, we shift to meds every 4 hours instead of every 2 and taper down to every 6 hours come Wednesday. I'm staying home tomorrow again and will figure something out for Wednesday - likely go in late, leave early. I'm feeling very relieved... just wish she wasn't still so "blinky".

Thanks for the good wishes. This definitely was not fun!

Dyna's vet thinks things are looking promising so it does look like we're winning this battle. I don't want to jinx it either, so won't post another update until after our next vet trip in a few days, but things do look like they're progressing in the right direction.

Thanks for the good wishes and luck sent our way :)

We're still treating her eye with meds but less frequently... the vet is confident we're winning. Thanks so much for asking. I'll likely post the next update when we are told we can stop with the meds ;)

Thanks again, hon. We're still administering the meds. Our vet saw Dyna again Saturday and wasn't happy with the lack of progress so we'll be switching to new meds this week. Hopefully they'll do the trick.

Oh my goodness, it sounds like your hands are full there. Poor doggie; that's so scary. And I feel for you guys with the demanding prescription, but I'm glad that things are sounding hopeful. :)

Yikes on the co-worker, but I'm crossing my fingers for you. I think anyone who's ever loved a pet can sympathize and try to help you out there. Because really, now is the time you could use that support. :)

Hnag in there, and I will think good thoughts for Dyna and the family. *hugs*

I'm just beat but the good news is, after yesterday's vet appointment, we've been given the okay to back down the doses so I was able to get 4 hours straight sleep this morning, after hubby left for work. Tomorrow we're up to 6 hours increments so I'm going in to work without Dyna, but only going in for a part day. I'll do the same Thursday - not yet sure about Friday? Vet thinks we're winning though so it's worth it ;)

Thanks for the good wishes. Everyone's positivity has definitely helped the cause :)
