What I did on my summer vacation (VanCon Report Part 1)

September 10th, 2009 (12:33 am)

Me again. Well, it's only a day away from the season 5 premiere and I've decided that if I don't write up some sort of report on VanCon now, I'll never get it done. Before I do, let me just preface it all by saying that my week in British Columbia may well have been the best vacation I've ever had (despite the fact my hubby was absent from it – sorry, babe!). My enjoyment was largely due to buckets o' VanCon squee but also because of the hospitality of, and wonderful time spent with, my friends R&L near Aldergrove (about 45 miles east of the Wall Centre).

I flew into Vancouver the Wednesday morning prior to the con, L picked me up and off we went to play tourist. Stanley Park was my #1 destination choice and it didn't disappoint. It's a stunning park and the weather was equally awesome so we spent quite a while hiking within it and enjoying the all the sights.

Trees in Stanley Park - they sure grow 'em big in B.C.                          And their totems too!

Next stop was R&L's place and the route took us past Surrey, White Rock, Langley and many other places our SPN boys have filmed in. I'm pretty sure we passed by the infamous lucky restaurant from "Bad Day at Black Rock" but I held my composure and resisted being a fangirl. After all, R&L are real life friends. ;)

Speaking of filming locations, this first trip to R&L's place was the one and only time we didn't drive past the Smallville farm in our travels. Though I've never watched much of Smallville, the house was definitely recognizable and I was quite surprised to see just how close to the road it actually was. When the show is shot there, I can only assume the crews and equipment must spill out onto the road to do their thing.

We took this back-route to L's so we could have a drive-by of the house R&L are having built on the south end of their property. You see, they recently purchased acreage for a horse farm and are currently living in the farm's adorable original house while their new place is still under construction. It's taking some time because the outbuildings went up first (horse barn, workshop, etc.) but once they move into the new place, L's mom is driving them out and moving into "the cottage". And, since the old house is just a 1 bedroom, I lived in "the coach-house" during my stay *g*.

"My" coach-house

I loved staying in the trailer, especially come the next morning when the view from the little bedroom window gave me a glimpse of some mares and their foals grazing in the pasture behind me. ::contented sigh::

The day was still young so L & I took Hud (72 lbs of 5 month old German Shepherd puppy) and a few of her JRTs for a hike through their gorgeous ancient forest. One of the Russells was Yukon, my grandson… well, okay, my Kismet's grandson. It was such a treat to meet him. I'd say there's definitely a family resemblance.

R&L had other friends staying with them for a few days overlapping my visit (sleeping in their own trailer) so that first night the 5 of us hung out on the cottage veranda and enjoyed some amazing steaks barbequed by R, fabulous wine, and great conversation… whereupon I discovered that everyone around the table were all huge fans of Deadwood! So, my venture into the city to see Ellsworth's Q&A on stage was met with much enthusiasm and no ridicule at all ;). Bless you Jim Beaver! {{hugs}}

Thursday, after helping L with chores around the farm (and falling in love with the yearling foal they bred – sorry no pictures because I'm an idiot), we tootled around Langley and Fort Langley and visited various antique shops and other nifty places. I bought a few trinkets to bring home to family and enjoyed an awesome lunch at Beatniks Bistro out on their patio. Man, did I have a wrap to die for! Yum!

The Fort Langley Community Hall.
What? It's a classic late 60's Chevy... you think I could resist?

Back at the farm, we went for another hike in the woods, checked out the house site (which looks amazing) and spent a quiet evening eating, drinking more wine, chatting, and heading to bed fairly early.

The next morning brought VanCon Day #1 so I spent time getting myself and my suitcase ready, visited with L's mom who came over to play in her vegetable garden and, once L finished her chores, she generously drove me into the city and dropped me off at the Wall Centre.

Where my adventure in fangirling began…

Stay tuned for part 2 of my adventures in B.C.

Sounds like great fun. I love the picture of Yukon and Kismet. Boy they look alike.

I also think I love Hud. Of course I go straight for the doggy stuff.

The farm looks lovely. I have buckets of envy, but it is a good thing. I am happy you had such a great time.

Terriers - Kismet Grin

I'd focus immediately on the dog stuff too if I were in your shoes ;)

Hud is a wonderful puppy and is utterly and completely devoted to R which is exactly what L wanted when she bought him for her hubby. It was great seeing the terriers too. I also saw Finesse, for the second time, another Kismet grandkid who L brought with her to Ontario on a visit with us a few years ago. Yukon is Kismet's youngest grandkid so this was the first chance I had to see him. I did have an awesome trip and will start posting about the actual con today ;).

Terriers - Kismet Grin

I love R&L's place. When they initially told us they were moving from their former farm near Surrey/White Rock, I thought they'd be hard pressed to find anything as beautiful. WRONGGGGG!

This new place with its forests, streams, rivers, etc. is damn near ethereal in its beauty and it felt like paradise when I was there. An awesome place to decompress after the frenzy of the con ;).

And yup, I loved seeing the grandpuppies. While I was there, Finesse - Kismet's oldest granddaughter (she's 6) - was very pregnant and has since had her pups. I so would've loved to be there for the whelping but I'm still very much looking forward to their pictures :)
