Rest in peace, Patrick

September 14th, 2009 (09:18 pm)
sad

where i am: with Tumble & Dyna
how i am: sad
accompanied by: TV chatter

Patrick Swayze was one of my first major actor crushes, long before I ever saw Dirty Dancing or Ghost. I cried for his character Gary Sturgis in a 1981 episode of M*A*S*H and religiously watched the short-lived The Renegades because of his  "Bandit" - the character he'd played in the 1982 TV movie of the same name. 1983 gave him to me in Uncommon Valor and The Outsiders and by then I was well and truly hooked.

Was he a brilliant actor? No, and certainly not in Jensen's league. But he could make me cry back then. And apparently now just a little bit too :(.

My heartfelt sympathies go to Lisa and the rest of Patrick's family.

God, The Outsiders, Red Dawn and Dirty Dancing ("Nobody puts Baby in a corner"), especially The Outsiders and Dirty Dancing were a great part of my "tween"/teen years.

RIP, Patrick. May you rest in peace.

Terriers - Tucker

I've been lacking any enthusiasm at all over the news of the Red Dawn remake but just read today that JDM had been given the equivalent role that Powers Boothe had in the original. A role that I think he'd be perfect for. Funny how thoughts of that movie brought out hope for potential and then much sadness in just a few hours.

I just finished composing an email to someone who has 2 Tucker kids, the youngest being Tumble's brother Dakota and the oldest, Zoe, having been bred by others. Zoe is quite ill and the owner I think was basically looking for advice or maybe even words of approval, letting her know it's okay to let Zoe go. I gave it to her. How did this night suddenly become so sad? Sigh.

On a much more pleasant note, how was your trip? Did you guys watch the premiere together?

I just saw a local news piece about Patrick's death and some of the movies he's done, and I can't believe I forgot about "Point Break" (with Keanu Reeves).

I can't believe Hollywood is remaking Red Dawn...it wasn't that great of a movie in the 80s. They need to stop looking to the 80s for inspiration for today's movie and TV shows.

Yes, we watched the premiere together...we all thought it was a pretty lackluster premiere, we only watched it once. The trip was good, but the weather was only so-so. I met a friend of mog's and Ti's...she was also in the Mag7 fandom(she was an Ezra fan). Does the name Meg Tipper sound familiar to you?

btw, I mailed the DVDs today, the post office said you should have them in about 6-10 business days, so sometime next week.

Yup, Point Break is one for the records books.

I agree. Red Dawn wasn't great to begin with, despite it cast of cuties and now, because the communist threat is non-existent, they're going to film it as an A/U which is even more ridiculous. Trust me, I don't see myself rushing to see it until/unless I hear stellar reviews about Hollywood doing a better job this time around. Still, I really think JDM is a great casting choice for that character. I'm sure he'll nail it.

I haven't re-watched 5.01 again either though think I might on Weds. when space airs it. Space has gone back this season to not airing the eps until 6 days after the CW broadcast but I'm catching it on Sun Thursday at 9 still so that's okay. Mind you, once the networks start their seasons, I'll be DVRing SPN and watching it at 10:00. I didn't love the premiere but there was a lot I liked about it, mostly Jensen's Dean (his speech to Bobby and his telling Sam how he feels). We'll see how the season goes. Sounds like Kripke's waffling about a s6 now and, as much as I know Jensen likes the steady employment, I'm still hoping for bigger and better for him come '10/'11. time will tell.

Oops, forgot to address Meg Tipper. IIRC, I read some of her stuff but it was very Ezra-centric so I didn't read a lot of it. I think she wrote fantasy A/Us amongst other things. Almost all her stuff ended up being A/Us if I'm thinking of the right fic-writer.

Thanks so very much for getting the DVDs for me! I haven't picked up the other USMO I need so will get them both asap. Let me know what I owe you.

So very sad and much, much too soon. We were actually watching one of the last episodes of The Beast tonight and remarked what great work he had done in this series. The series itself was nothing particularly special and the young "hunky" lead seems to fancy himself another DiCaprio, but Patrick did some very, very fine work and delivered consistently wonderful performances. I was so, so hoping he would be able to beat this. He did well to hang on for as long as he did.
He was one of my early crushes as well -- I think North and South was what really put him on my map...
He will be missed, but I am sure he will also be remembered.

Terriers - Luna

I didn't watch The Beast consistently enough to follow the underlying story but truly enjoyed Patrick's work on it. I thought he did a fabulous job. I too hoped he'd pull through somehow. It really is too sad.

You'll never believe me when I tell you this but I cast Patrick as Daryl long before Coppola did. When I first found out who was cast, I thought I'd dreamt it and then once I saw the posters and first ads, I realized it was real. Man did I squee (before I even knew the word existed) when I found out Coppola agreed with me! LOL

That's awesome! I was thrilled to see him in that movie-I adored the book. I read it so many times and now it's in tatters-lol. But he made that character for me. :)

OMG... ROTFLMAO.

I'm sorry, since this is such a terribly sad subject but, re-read what you wrote me here but put that in the context of me having just sent you my comments about hubby taking care of our dogs' glands and me assuming when I opened your message in email that you were replying to that conversation and not this Patrick one.

Good thing I didn't have a drink in my hand ;).

With apologies to Patrick... who, I honestly think would have gotten a real chuckle out of my misunderstanding and not be upset by it

*sigh* A great loss indeed. I have a list of movies from 'The outsiders' and right through 80s and 90s, films that I enjoyed.

May he R.I.P
