Introducing... Cannon

September 17th, 2010 (06:56 pm)

where i am: hanging with Tumble & Dyna
how i am: tired
accompanied by: Tumble's tiptoes

As some of you know, at the end of my VanCon trip I was going to be making a detour on my way home, stopping in Winnipeg to pick up the newest addition to our family. And here he is…

Colin vom Slaney-Vale, aka Cannon!

Cannon is a Deutsch-Drahthaar, just like our Cooper. With Coop turning 8 in November, we wanted to get a pup for hubby so that when Cooper started to slow down in his bird-dog duties, hubby would have a well-trained 2 year old ready to ease the load and eventually take over as Coop headed into “retirement”.

With Cannon & Coop’s breed club, the pups are registered with names prior to being old enough to go home, hence the name Colin which we didn’t choose. Most have German sounding handles and/or kennel names – his mom is Frida vom Erthal (aka Erna) and his dad is Colt vom Entenmoor (and Cooper is Cammo vom Flutwasser). We didn’t want to use Colin and, since my hubby didn’t agree with naming him Colt after his sire like I’d wanted (and that’s without clueing in as to why Colt would really appeal to me LOL), I suggested another “gun” name:  Cannon. Hubby liked it, so that’s what we’re calling the little dude.

Cannon’s been home a few weeks now and I adore him but he’s gonna be the death of me! Far from the perfect puppy, he is not going to be easy when it comes to minor issues such as house-training, chewing/nipping, and sleeping through the night. In fact, at this point he may well be the most difficult pup we’ve raised since Cody, who we brought home 20 years ago. Cannon’s still a baby (11 weeks today) and is taking to that role with gusto. He doesn’t sleep through the night, waking us up to go outside around 2 and 4:30 in the morning. Which is a good thing, I know. Better that than having accidents in his crate but I am soooo damn tired! I am definitely looking forward to the day he can hold his bladder through the night. My bet is that’ll come in about a month’s time, no more than 2. It’s just surviving until then that’s the problem ;).

I started Puppy Kindergarten classes with him Monday and it was a riot. Youngest in a class of 5, Cannon falls right in the middle in terms of size, though I suspect he might race past #2 Cara, a 16 wk old German Shorthaired Pointer female, by the time we graduate. He doesn’t have a hope in hell of catching 16 wk old Rocky though (a beautiful big male Mastiff)! My best buddy J is going to come to class as often as possible and will take photographs. I’ll certainly share any that are worthy.

Here are a few more pictures of the little chunk, the first of which was taken his first full day with us (@ 8.5 wks) with the others taken on Tuesday:

More on his exploits in the future I’m sure ;)

He is about the cutest thing on four legs.

Cammo vom Flutwasser That is just bad, dirty, wrong - glad you figured out Cooper for the old boy.

I like Cannon's name. Look at the paws on that guy. He is gonna be a bruiser.

Good luck on the sleeping through the night. *giggles*

EEeeeEEEE! Hi Cannon! He's gotten even cuter and more handsome since wee puppyhood.

I feel for you with the tough puppyhood. Hope you start getting some sleep soon.

I think so too. Hoping to get some shots with him standing on all 4's, if not this weekend, at least at our next puppy class.

Hope you start getting some sleep soon.

Thanks. I'm so glad it's the weekend. Even if he does wake us up, at least we can sleep a little longer into the morning (assuming he lets us).

Cutieeee!
And it's ok to walk him couple of times through the night. I do that too with my old doggie because she's old and can't wait till morning. Tired? yes. But it's way better than accidents.

Yeah, my old girl Flurry often goes out with us, which is good for her. I'm still hoping for Cannon to last an all-nighter sooner rather than later though ;).

He is damn cute though :)

He's a cutie! Too bad hubby nixed the name Colt. Beyond the obvious, it's just a cool name for a dog. But so's Cannon. :)

I hope he starts sleeping through the night soon. Sleep deprivation isn't fun, but on the upside it can be good for your creativity!

I have a feeling he's going to end up bigger than his father so that makes the name "Cannon" even more fitting to my mind ;) I'm glad you like "Cannon" though, I'm with you, "Colt" is a really cool name for a dog ;)

Thanks!

I'm sure I probably owe you a post con email but I'll have to use the pup as an excuse for my absence on line these days. The opportunities are few and far between. Just wanted to say again how much fun I had with you in BC ♥

JDM Bisou

Thank-you!

Glad he's in puppy class.

I'm actually going to sign him up for another school's class that starts in a few weeks so there will be about a 2 week overlap. I want him to get as much baby socializing with other dogs as possible. I'll continue with the classes at the second school. I like the instructor's methods but have never gone to her since she started her own school. She actually got a JRT pup from us years ago (who passed away in 2008) and I've recommended her to others so now it's my turn ;).

When do you start hunt training?

Aside from encouraging his natural retrieving tendencies the past few weeks, we've done nothing formal yet but we're going to start some training this weekend: likely tracking (treats in the grass) and OMG! does he follow his nose, so that won't be a problem. We probably won't introduce him to birds until he has a lot of the basic yard training well in hand, i.e. teaching him to whoa on command, recalls, etc. Cooper was our first bird dog and is a great worker both in field trials and, where it really counts, the hunt field but we're looking forward to taking what we learned with him and watching others train their dogs and applying that experience to a new pup. The German system is very rigid and Cannon will have to run his first field test in May (along with in some cases much older pups) and with our miserable winters, that means trying to pack in as much training as possible without overloading the pup. It's going to be an interesting 2010/11 season ;).

I feel so blessed that our Aussie girl only screeched for 2 or 3 nights in her new crate. :-p

Cannon is adorable as can be, looks like a German Shorthair with a beard! He sounds like quite the boy and a whole lotta dog. Hope hubby is ready for him, lol!

And hope you get some sleep, soon. *hugs you - tickles silly puppy*

Hey! {{{::tacklehugs::}}} Great to hear from you!!!

He actually settles well in his crate or pen and seldom does any caterwauling but, when he wakes and starts fussing at night, he really does have to go.

I feel so blessed that our Aussie girl

::taps foot impatiently:: And why have you not posted anything about her on lj? I had meant to email you to give you hell about that ;) I think deangirl1 mentioned it recently that you had a new pup and that you'd posted about her on FB. You must show me a picture when you can!

While I was writing about my VanCon trip this year, I was thinking about you. I'm so glad we got to meet and spend a smidgen of time together last year :)

DECEMBER

HOMG - is dead from the cuteness.

Colin??

Colin??

Poor baby, Cannon does really suit him and it's a smart cool name, hope he doesn't grow into it too literally! I'm with you, "Colt" would have been perfect too, didn't you try for "Winchester"? **sniggers and runs off**

Getting up IS a PITA, but I agree with you, if he's got the manners to ask, how could you not? Mine were like that for about a month or so, you could set your watch by the 12am, 4am cries, they soon put the 12am one back an hour and the 4am one forward an hour though and then that was perfect for me as I'm always up around 5 in the summer, sadly you're going into winter and so I suppose your mornings are getting darker, but you never know, it might encourage him to sleep a little longer, mine were all "The birds are up why aren't you?"

Boys

didn't you try for "Winchester"?

LOL, hubby may be dense sometimes but I wouldn't've been able to get that one past him *g*

they soon put the 12am one back an hour and the 4am one forward an hour though

I'm hoping for that soon. Hubby is seldom awake later than 5 and I'm seldom in bed before midnight so, once Cannon's bladder can handle that shift, we'll be in the free and clear.

As for Colin. I know, right?

The breed club requires each litter to have reg'd names with a consistent letter, i.e. all the pups from the kennel's first litter are registered with "A" names, next litter "B" and so on. So both Coop (Cammo) and Cannon (Colin) were born of their respective breeders' third litters. That we chose to give them names that start with C as their call names is somewhat coincindence, somewhat by plan. Add that club requirement to the breeder wanting to register all his pups with names of family/friends from "back home" and you come up with names like Colin and his siblings Claire, Christina, Carlo, Chantal & Conny. Personally, my response to those is: Ugh!

Since we were pretty certain we'd go with Cannon, we asked the breeder if he could be reg'd with that name and the breeder asked us not to "make him break his tradition". Though my inside voice was saying, what's going to happen to your precious tradition when you get to your "I" litter or, in years to come, "U", "X", "Y" & "Z", hubby and I didn't push and Cannon is reg'd as Colin. The only positive I can pull from that name is that Cannon, at least as a baby, looks like his sire and the fact that the first 3 letters of their reg'd names are the same, gives it some sense for lack of a better word ?? We could've had Carlo... I can't decide if that's better or worse LOL

Terriers - Tuck Cody Window

Great to hear from you!

How are your puglings doing?

I haven't posted anything about this but Dyna, one of my youngest (coming up on 9), is ill and I'm thinking the worst. She's dropping weight horribly and yesterday couldn't keep anything in or refused to eat :( Blood results aren't good at all but right now we're treating the symptoms with meds/diet and, if we don't see improvement next week, we'll know it's one of 2 bad things (we'll have to biopsy to be sure which one). If it's Lymphangiectasia, with treatment we could buy months to a couple of years, if it's cancer, she likely won't see her birthday in November. I'm not handling this well. Boomer (almost 15) is in decline and hubs and I are both thinking that this coming winter will be his last. Flurry (almost 14) and Kismet (12+) are doing great but, given their ages, that could change any time. If I lose one of my youngest *before* any of these, well... it just feels like the domino is about to fall :(

Thankfully we brought a pup in the house that I'm already bonded to before Dyna started showing symptoms. I had problems bonding with Coop, bringing him in 3 months after losing Cody & Ranger. I love him but don't really remember his puppy days with us at all. I've already slacked off on puppy homework with Cannon in lieu of spending special quality time with Dyna (who is still perky and active, despite what's going on with her body).

I hope your crew are well and happy {{hugs}}
