Oh, how I miss late 70s/early 80s TV drama!

I have a confession to make.

Ever since I posted my eye candy Valentine's collages in February (here, here, and here), I just couldn't shake the short-lived series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers out of my head. In no time I began surfing, searching for clips, websites, photos, anything. Even though I hadn't watched the show since its original run (1982/83), some of its scenes have remained fondly stuck in my memory all these years. Despite how busy life was/is with work, my dad, and the dogs, I would make time in the wee hours of the night to surf for 7B47B. And what did I find? That, just my luck, practically no fandom exists for it at all. There are a few clips on YouTube, but not the ones I was after. I found one lone fic posted about a decade ago (not even fanfiction.net has a category for it LOL); a pretty much inactive Yahoo group with maybe about 30 members and; empty LJ & DW communities. Despite how little there is though, I was pointed to a guy selling poor quality DVDs made from old VHS recordings of the first and only season (he was open about the quality). Of course I couldn't resist and got them at the end of March. The quality is pretty lousy, but no worse than my Lancer tapes which I cherish.

And I love these too! So much for rose-colored glasses, I've actually been pleasantly surprised at how much I'm enjoying them. For anyone (most of you?) unfamiliar with the show, this is largely why it appealed to young ladies back in the day:

For me, these 3 were specifically why I watched:

I had been madly in love with Richard Dean Anderson as Jeff Webber on General Hospital so had been thrilled to find out he had a new series, especially a contemporary western/family drama. That Peter Horton was in it too was an added bonus. I don't think I knew Roger Wilson at that time but, as was often the case with fickle me, I may have started watching for RDA but Peter and Roger as Crane and Daniel McFadden completely stole my heart.

Anyway, assuming you're still with me, back to info about the show. Based extremely loosely on the musical/movie of the same name, the series in fact only had one bride – Hannah – who married the eldest of the 7 McFadden brothers (RDA's character, Adam), who ranged in age from 12 to 27. Having lost both parents about 10 years before, they all lived under one big roof on their struggling cattle ranch, with Adam as head of the family. I know… it sounds like a bad fic, doesn't it? *g*

Long before Glee could lay claim to being a TV series that blended humor and drama with a musical score, 7B47B did this as well. Well, maybe not as well, per se ;). There's impromptu dancing and singing and, though it doesn't make me cringe as much as I thought it might nearly 30 years later, I would've rather they stuck with the drama, laced with their wonderful light touches. Having said that, when they did weave the music in seamlessly (thanks largely to Roger's and Peter's considerable talents), I loved it then and I love it now.

So, why am I going on about this show? Two reasons: First, because of the brothers' relationships. OMG, is it a joy to watch these gorgeous men interact! They must have had a blast doing the show and, like Jared and Jensen who are isolated up in Vancouver, I can't help but think that these young men shooting the show in northern California created a genuine bond, at least for the duration of the season. And, here's where my subject line comes in. I know – finally!…

Back then, at the tail end of the good ol’ days of canon-provided h/c (waves at Starsky & Hutch, et al), we actually see the brothers showing affection for each other in many ways, even giving each other hugs (without one of them having died and been resurrected first *eg*). For this reason alone, this old show is heaven for me. See what I mean…

Along with the hair tousling, face patting and arm grasping we have above, there is also tons of patting of backs, bellies, legs, along with things like jacket tugging, horseplay, affectionate nicknaming/name calling, you name it.

Did I mention hugs? I can't even think of all of the others I left out!

{C}{C}{C}{C}{C}{C}

Look, we even have bedside chats and hand squeezing! Even big sister(in law) Hannah gets in on the act with, in this case, a tender, comforting kiss to the top of Daniel's head. Something her stoic husband – Col. Jack O'Neill himself! – does with the younger boys on more than one occasion!

And, lastly, we have 12 year old River Phoenix in his first role. His acting wasn't stellar at this age but he sure was adorable. And his character Guthrie definitely brought out the tender side in his big brothers…

Okay, I know my OCD got a little carried away here but, since I was looking for a few images to make icons out of, I decided to start snapping some shots of the h/c and demonstrated affection. BTW, these images aren't true screen grabs but only actual photos I took of my monitor as I was playing the DVDs. The quality of the DVDs is better than these – not by much, but better.

I mentioned there was a second reason I'm going on about this show. And that's because, I have some good news. Sort of…

For the first time since November of 2008, I’ve actually written a fic from start to finish, and I can’t express just how happy/relieved/accomplished/amazing that makes me feel. I’ve actually had longer droughts but, this one has been damn depressing. And now I’ve been flying high from the moment I started writing, and finished, this past weekend \o/

Alas, leave it to me – or, shall we say, my muse – to decide to write something based on a TV show so obscure, it doesn’t have a fandom! Yup, no surprise by now I'm sure, it's a 7B47B fic ::head desk::

But, since it does have gorgeous brothers and it does have hurt/comfort and angst I’m going to be posting it here. In hopes that a few of you might just decide to check it out. Besides, it’s my lj, where else am I gonna put it?

If this made you curious at all and you want to check out the fic, I'll be posting it very soon along with a very short episode clip, since the fic is episode related. And, since maybe only 3 or 4 of you on my flist remember the show (and maybe one remembers the ep), the clip will help with the fic's setup.

You know, the last time I had a long fic drought, the death of my mom and the soon after acquisition of my Lancer DVDs and subsequent discovery of SPN brought my muse back to life. These 7B47B DVDs came to me shortly before I lost Dyna and here I am writing again. Funny how life takes these turns. Here's hoping an alive and kicking muse will start talking Winchester to me again too ;).

P.S. For anyone interested in the 7B47B DVD's, just mention that in the comments below and I'll reply with the contact info.

LOL, I was expecting to hear from you and have been meaning to send you the DVD info since you'd expressed an interest back in February. They are pretty crappy quality DVDs but, for me, they were worth every penny (roughly $15-$20 for the season) Here's a link to the ioffer site where they were being sold.

http://www.ioffer.com/selling/uncascrog

If he doesn't have any up for sale when you check it out, that doesn't mean he won't make more so, either contact him from the site or, let me know, and I'll tell him to put more up there. 2 of my old Mag7 friends have purchased them since I did and are happy with them too, despite the bad quality. The brotherly love just abounds and overrides all else ♥

LJ is not cooperating with me, otherwise I'd already have the story posted. A few hours ago I spent about 45 minutes getting it up there, along with embedding a 7B ep clip, plus composing a bit of a summary and, POOF! it disappeared on me before I could upload it :( At that point I'd already spent way too much time on my computer today and was getting really grumpy so decided to abandon ship and try later. Hopefully I'll have it up by early evening. I'm glad to know at least one person will read my fic LOL.

Terriers - Wishbone Rose

I so wish they had the sole season on pre-DVD. The scenery/landscape (and I don't mean the gorgeous modern-day cowboys) was beautiful and so different than the Dallas and Dynasty shows of the day.

I've just posted the fic, along with the ep clip that inspired it, here. I hope, if you give it a read, you enjoy it :)

Lovely to hear from you!

Wow, I didn't know Peter Horton until thirtysomething, And that's Drake Hogestyn from pre-DOOL? Ha!

Dean Cowboy Hat

Yup, Drake is there as Brian, second oldest brother *g*. 7B is where I first saw Drake but I think PH first got my attention on an ep of White Shadow LOL. He guest-starred on a very poignant ep, though I don't recall specifics. I just know it got a lot of attention in TV Guide back in the day. There definitely were some fine lookin' modern day cowboys on 7B47B :)

Great to hear from you! I hope all is going well with you and phetchpup. Cannon, my pup, turned 1 year yesterday. Man, how time flies!

Phetchpup and I are good, though too much time indoors in the hot Florida summer.

Happy birthday Cannon! I thought of him this past week- the Daily Puppy one day was a wire haired pointing Griffon and it reminded me of him.

Awww, WPG's are so lovely too. We've had some brutal heat early on this season after really having no spring. I would imagine you get driven indoors - that god hubby and I *finally* got a/c about 5 years ago. It has made summers up here bearable when the humidity and heat combine to create steam sauna's inside and out.

Enjoy what outside time you get with phetchpup!

I loved this show! I can't say I remember specifics all that well, but it was totally my kind of show :-).

Why am I not even remotely surprised you loved this show, Katie? ;) And though the dancing and some of the singing is pretty corny, a lot of the eps do stand the test of time with lovely angst, h/c, and tons and tons of the afore-mentioned brotherly affection. Sigh.

I've posted a little 90 second clip of the ep that inspired my fic so you might want to watch it, to bring back fond memories, even if you don't read my little ficlet (though I'd love yo to do so). They're both here.

Lovely to hear from you! I hope you enjoy your break between school years :)

I am nothing if not predictable. Somehow I don't remember the singing bits, but I remember writing lots of fanfic in my head about the show before I even knew people actually wrote those kinds of stories down.

Hey, I love it that you're predictable... if we didn't have similar tastes I never would've read Rusalka et al and I could still hug you for pointing me in that direction so many years ago ;)

I swear these missing scenes I wrote for this ep started in my head 28 years ago, so I so know what you're talking about LOL! I so wish these eps were readily available in pro-quality. You might recall the mine cave-in one? I love it much more now than I did then. It's just fabulous... well, except for River's musical number ;). Roger did an incredibly fantastic job with Daniel's guilt/angst. Exceptional. When I ordered these, I was simply looking for some remembered h/c and brotherly love. I truly didn't expect to find "exceptional" in the mix but it's actually there ♥

I forgot about this show! I don't remember it as well as you do and I should have because it is exactly the kind of show I would have loved.

Can't wait to read your fic and maybe try to find something on youtube...maybe even get those DVDs down the road!

Hey there! I've been pleasantly surprised by how good some of the writing is (not all the time by any means, but there are some gems). I just wrote this in another response to this entry:

Anyway, the fic's posted here (along with a short clip from an ep) so I hope you do give it a read and enjoy it. Unfortunately there's not much to be found on YouTube, though I believe the Guthrie-centric "Gold Fever" is there in full plus there are other River Phoenix or Drake Hogestyn focused scenes posted by some fans.

Love these brothers!

I have to second May's enthusiasm for this little show - she got me hooked and I'm forever grateful. :) Brotherly smarm abounds and it doesn't hurt that most are not only wonderful to look at, but make you believe they truly love each other. I'm in love all over again myself! But I won't blame you if you ff past some of the musical numbers, I confess I do that too.

You are more than welcome! It's so refreshing to feel the love abound and see it too. They definitely understood the meaning of "show, don't tell". The brotherly bonds are rampant and what a beautiful thing ♥

Though I only vaguely remember this show, I love this post (and may perhaps have to familiarize myself with these brothers as to therefore enjoy your fiction).

Lately I've been enjoying old favorites of my own. There's something about the straightforward... cheese ;) ...from that tv era that I just enjoy.

And my conclusion to this re-watching is that I process pretty much all TV input in terms of fanfiction - a challenging proposition for shows where fandoms don't exist.

Glad you're going with it. :)

Hey, there. How lovely to hear from you :)

I'm glad you enjoyed my post - my enthusiasm was definitely showing through... as was my OCD ;) Yes, the cheese of that era was wonderful. I watched another 7B ep yesterday and there were so many little moments I missed even since purchasing and watching these eps again. More hand clasps, hands resting on shoulders and, even better, necks. Sigh. Them's were the days LOL.

Even if you don't try out my little fic, I urge you to check out the fic entry ( http://may7fic.livejournal.com/39766.html ) just to watch that sweet hug between big and little brother (played by Peter Horton & Roger Wilson). We just don't get that these days! My entry provides the setup for that clip and the fic so you won't be lost. Ah to see Sam & Dean do that!!! which would actually be awkward since Sam is so much taller than Dean)

Just a quick reply... my home computer crashed big-time a week ago and I'm trying not to use hubby's work laptop for lj and stuff (though failing here *g*). I'll definitely respond more at length once I get my new computer (it's on order). In the mean time, I just wanted you to know how glad I was that you enjoyed this entry and the little fic ♥

Re: 7B47B

Hi, I must introduc myself. Your story is similar to mine. I fell in love with this show when it aired in 1982-83. I fell in love with Roger Wilson and followed his career after being devastated by this show getting cancelled. It crossed my mind back in June and I started searching the internet and was delighted to snag the DVD's of the one season for myself in July. It is now September and I haven't watched regular TV since. The only thing I watch is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Other than that, I keep a check of fanfiction. Imagine how delighted I was in July to stumble upon the sight and find a dozen + stories about the McFaddens? I also go online and watch a little movie from 1985 called Thunder Alley. It starred Roger Wilson and if you haven't seen it but are a fan of his talent, you should really check it out. There are some clips of him singing and playing in that movie on YouTube as well. I'm attempting to write a Seven Bride's story, but I must selfishly admit that I prefer to read other folks stories than to make up my own.

7B-3

How lovely to hear from you. I'm so glad you were able to get copies of the DVDs as I did. How I wish there was an official set out there!

I'm also glad you wandered over to fanfiction.net and found those stories. My husband would surely roll his eyes but I have to say one of my proudest accomplishments to date has been setting up that 7B category and watching it grow. As of today, I think we have 21 stories uploaded, including my latest which I've just started posting.

As for Thunder Alley... I love it and do have a copy of the DVD which I've watched numerous times this year. I always thought Roger was gorgeous but that he's so multi-talented has kept him closer to my heart than those many other crushes that have come and gone over the years. Plus I admire what he did for New Orleans and his causes since then.

Here's a treat for you if you haven't found it yourself. Though he's not credited, it's definitely him singing with his pals, the band Born Again Baldwins. Make sure you watch all of it - to hear and see how good he still looks these days ;)

http://youtu.be/_rb7Q6J2hEk

Though I'm not a big fan of rap-style mash-ups, I love how he sounds in Champagne Supernova, Take the Money and Run and Rebel Yell. I soooo wish there was more of him singing out there in video land!

Re: Hello
7B-3

Waves to you from LJ \o/

I can't believe how long it's been since I had posted this entry. Time has flown... it doesn't feel like I've been entrenched in the 7B fandom for this long. Maybe because in my heart of hearts I've always been entrenched in it ;)

My gushing in this entry nearly makes me blush. And to think, I ended up starting the 7B category on ffnet afterward. Well, *somebody* had to LOL.

Nice to have you stopping by over here too! I hope you enjoyed my last chapter as much as the prior ones. I'm due to post my next one this weekend, possibly tonight if I can keep my eyes from crossing. I want to give it one last read-over before uploading but I'm beat from a long outing with the hubs and lots of walking around and driving and right now am contemplating napping instead.

Thanks for popping by and giving my glowing review of the series and DVDs a read. I wish it had pulled more talented SPN-writers into the 7B fandom. They don't know what they're missing!
