Movie Rec: Warrior

March 20th, 2012 (12:44 am)
where i am: hanging with Kismet & Tumble
how i am: enthralled
accompanied by: still of the night

I know I've been horribly absent lately and may well have missed mention of this movie on your own pages at any given point in the last 6 months so I'm probably late to the party. But, in case some of you are as well, I must highly, highly, highly recommend Warrior, starring Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton and Nick Nolte.

Though not terribly familiar with the two leads (I know, apparently I've lived under a rock when it comes to Tom Hardy), I had wanted to catch it since it first became available on DVD/demand, figuring it was something I could watch with my fight-fan hubby. Life got in the way though and we only just watched it the weekend before last. I've watched its two hours plus in entirety twice since then and its heart-wrenching conclusion at least 20 times in between I'm sure. It completly drained me (in a good way) the first time and the morning after felt like I had an emotional hangover. I couldn't shake the Conlon family. Since then I've searched for fic (finding very little, but a few gems), read reviews, watched interviews and even searched lj looking for any entries that talk about it, even replying to perfect strangers' entries just to have someone, anyone to share in the Warrior love. Hell, I don't just love this movie, I think I want to marry it! LOL

So, in case some of you might have dismissed it as just a movie about mixed martial arts, let me just say this... Warrior is so much more. It's as much a family drama set in a MMA setting as Supernatural is a family drama set in a supernatural universe. Hell, maybe even more of a family drama. With a family comprised of a father and a pair of sons more dysfunctional than John and his boys. With PTSD, drug addiction, alcoholism, abuse, and abandonment issues in the mix, I honestly can't imagine anyone who loves the Winchester family dynamic not loving these brothers (and either loving or hating their dad).

Fair warning, there is "not enough" screen time with the brothers together but it's by design and IMHO the impact of Warrior's conclusion is that much stronger because of it. To help tide us over, there's a lovely bromance between the oldest brother and his coach and soul-shredding angst between the youngest brother and his dad. The acting is powerful and rivetting, (not just Nick Nolte's Oscar nominated performance) and I've become a huge fan of both Mssrs. Hardy and Edgerton because of it. Personally, I don't think either actor comes close to as gorgeous as Jensen and Jared (apologies to those who go gaga over Tom) but, I don't care. I have fallen hopelessly and helplessly in love with Brendan and Tommy Conlon (and Joel and Tom because of them).

Besides, these guys are nothing to sneeze at...

Yes it's clichéd, like so many sports movies are but, as someone said in a review I read... it embraces and transcends the clichés with gripping action, powerful acting, and tons of heart. And OMG does it have heart! I genuinely think this is a special movie and hope this review gives it a few more viewers. Oh, and if you do watch it and love it, please let me know. I'm still dying to share in the love ;)

Sooooooooo thrilled to find another Warrior lover. OMG what an awesome, awesome movie! I'll be purchasing the DVD too.

I've so become a fan of Tom. Since watching Warrior a week and a half ago, I've now seen him in Bronson, The Take, have Marie Antoinette set to record on my PVR and will be watching Tinker, Tailor this weekend LOL.

He's mesmerizing and such a talent. I'd so love to see him work with Joel again too. They have great chemistry in the interviews as well as that intense electricity between them in the movie.

I *loved* your review (thanks for the link) and will have more to say over there ;)

UTTER PERFECTION! :D

How amazing is Tom? he always goes for the broken characters, but he brings so much to his performances! <3 I have seen Inception, RocknRolla, The Take, Oliver Twist, Warrior, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, This Means War. I also have (but have not yet seen) Bronson, Wuthering Heights, Cape Wrath/Meadowlands, Stuart a Life Backwards.
What did you think of The Take? so intense and such heavy issues.

I would love to see him work with Joel as well. You're SO RIGHT about their chemistry :) He has that with Benedict Cumberbatch as well (TTSS, Stuart a Life Backwards)

Warrior Tear

I've absolutely fallen for Tom and love Joel too but Tom's broken little boy - Tommy - has wormed his way deeper into my heart. I watched Bronson shortly after Warrior and was soooo impressed. Even there, he brought out my sympathy. He's amazing. Same with The Take. Masterful performance! He absolutely broke my heart in TTSS and I'm sure I re-watched his tearful scene 5 times before it finally deleted from my onDemand account. Gorgeous! I've seen clips of him in Wuthering Heights, and Stuart, the latter of which I definitely want to watch in entirety. He also just melts me in that damn British Kleenex commercial (and the behind the scenes look at it) which I've probaly watched 30 times by now LOL. He's a truly brilliant actor and I can't wait to see more of him. I bought RocknRolla and will be watching it this weekend and look forward to seeing him in something lighter like This Means War. I'm really looking forward to Lawless (Wettest County) too. I'm an Oldman fan too so seeing them work together again will be a treat. Tom is utterly amazing and I am so looking forward to seeing more - everything LOL - from him ;)

TH reflective as Tommy

I'm returning the favor as you posted to my LJ and I just had to visit yours and lo, a post about WARRIOR! :)

(What's even more intriguing is that you also adore Jensen Ackles, he who was once my NUMBER ONE and now hovers in the fifth slot of my LIST.)

Anyhoo, I absolutely agree with all the good things you say about WARRIOR. It's a movie I absolutely recommend to anyone and everyone. I fell in love with Tom Hardy after this movie (even though I'd seen him here and there since STAR TREK: NEMESIS). I love how this movie makes me cry a little and laugh a little. It totally takes your heart and squeezes to remind you that you're alive.

Let's keep sharing that love! :D

Warrior Boys

Lovely to see you here! I just couldn't keep my mouth shut about Warrior LOL. Alas, I've been so absent lately, I don't think as many people read my entries as they used to so this message is falling on mostly deaf ears. I'm amazed the SPN community wasn't raving about Warrior though and I so want to spread the word ;)

Warrior has so much heart and the hope that its ending leaves us with just makes my heart soar. It'll no doubt be a bumpy road for the brothers but I have full faith they'll become family again ::sniff:: See... I can't shake them. They are so real to me!

You must tell me who the other three of your five are!! I think Tom has leapt into my top five though I've never actually considered a top list like that. You have me considering one though LOL. It's hard. Some of my favorite actors - whose work I seek out - aren't terribly pretty (John Hawkes and Brendan Gleeson are at the top). I think, from the current crop and off the top of my head, I'm leaning toward Jensen, Tom and Colin Farrell. Though, only Jensen and Tom have invaded my brain so dramatically in recent memory ;)

Thanks so very much for popping by ♥

TH as Handsome Bob leather jacket

I think the studio did a poor job of marketing Warrior. How could such an excellent movie not catch my attention until it was out on blu-ray?! I will say that I did watch it because of Tom Hardy but I wasn't rightly in love with him until after watching the movie. :)

I believe the brothers became a family again. I like to imagine Tommy being the wonderful uncle to his nieces and maybe, just maybe finding someone of his own. Awwww. :)

My List is actually 10 men deep but my top five are (in order):
Tom Hardy
Joe Manganiello (he of True Blood)
Charles Mesure (currently on Desperate Housewives)
Jensen Ackles (I must remember he's number 4, not 5!)
Chris Hemsworth

I am horribly superficial when it comes to my list. They're all good looking fellas but they're also talented to boot. At least I think they're talented. LOL! I also tend to favor the younger fellas though I'm trying not to go younger than Chris Hemsworth (who broke my previous rule of a fella needing to be born *after* 1980).

I could go on and on about my fellas. I even did a little essay on them when Charles was number one and Joe wasn't even a blip and Tom was not even in my top 20. My List has been fluid lately. LOL! Jensen was number one for YEARS, since Dark Angel. Yikes, it was probably almost 10 years that he sat at that spot. Well, I'm loyal at least, hmm?

Wow, I can just so babble about my fellas. LOL!

Something went wrong with the marketing. Maybe people had already seen The Fighter and assumed this was a band-wagon movie and would therefore be inferior. It wasn't AT ALL IMO.

I believe the brothers became a family again. I like to imagine Tommy being the wonderful uncle to his nieces and maybe, just maybe finding someone of his own. Awwww. :)

Awww, me too! Have you read any Warrior fic? I found one that creates a lovely, hopeful future for the family. It's here if you want to check it out. I see Tommy becoming an awesome uncle and he and Brendan becoming friends as well as brothers. ::melts:: LOL

Joe Manganiello (he of True Blood)
Charles Mesure (currently on Desperate Housewives)
Chris Hemsworth

I'm right with you with Joe. He is a magnificent specimen of a man. I had to look up Charles but recognize him now from V. He doesn't quite turn my crank the way the others do but I can certainly see why he appeals to you. And Chris... OMG, what a smile!! He lights up the room on screen the way Jensen does in person. I can't even imagine what witnessing Chris' smile in person would be like ;) I haven't seen enough of these 3 gents' work to put them at the top of my list -- yet -- but, to look at (and listen to). Yeah, I'm there ;)

I'm actually having a hard time coming up with more for my own list. I can be so fickle too... love 'em with a certain "look" and if they stray from it, I'm meh about them. See, I can be very superficial too LOL. I love JDM, am partial to Chris Evans... Hmmmm, I know I'm leaving out others but they've escaped my brain ATM. It sure is fun thinking about them though :)

with Charles

I haven't seen The Fighter but I have read opinions that Warrior is the "Rocky" of MMA. I think it's better than that!

I haven't read any Warrior fic. I'll have to check out that link! :)

Joe is MAGNIFICENT. I love that he's tall. Mmmmm!... I met Charles Mesure at a Xena convention eight years ago and was duly impressed. I got into him again when he arrived on V. Suddenly I had to watch as much of him as I could and I found his Kiwi/Aussie work online. He's delicious... Chris H. made me cry in Star Trek, so yeah, that's why he's in the top 5. Oh, and he's tall!

JDM and Chris Evans are in my bottom five of my Top 10:

Chris Pine
Karl Urban
Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Ryan Gosling
Chris Evans

Karl and Ryan are mostly there because I've loved them since their Xena/Herc and Young Herc days (respectively). Chris Pine plays a wonderful Captain Kirk and actually made me care about him. JDM, well, don't have to explain that one to you I'm sure. Or Chris E.

See what happens when I talk about the fellas? I just go on and on and on. LOL!

JDM CSI

Love that pic of you and Charles!

I enjoyed The Fighter but had some problems with it too. It felt a little disrespectful to me in how it treated Micky Ward's family of colorful characters. I don't feel that way at all about any of the characters in Warrior. My husband is a fight fan and thanks to osmosis I've learned to appreciate fighting (boxing and MMA) and can hold my own quite well with the guys when conversations turn to fighters. Osmosis has nothing to do with my love and admiration for Micky Ward and Arturo Gatti though, whose trilogy of fights will be the basis of The Fighter's sequel if Mr. Wahlburg finally gets it off the ground. *That* movie worries me because if it doesn't treat their friendship and bromance the way it should, it'll break my heart. Put it this way, I genuinely feel that the final Gatti/Ward fight played a part in inspiring The Warrior. That you could cheer for both of them and not want either to lose. Watching their last round and the fight's conclusion had me nearly as choked up as I was for Tommy & Brendan's last round and, I bet with a soundtrack, I would've been in tears LOL.

Yikes, so sorry for my segue LOL, getting back to your gorgeous men, I definitely appreciate those on your list. I am a fan of Chris Pine too as well as Karl Urban (though didn't enjoy him as McCoy, I'm afraid). With Gosling, I don't know what's wrong with me. His face just doesn't appeal to me. I'm growing to love him more and more thanks to his body of work though. And of course his body of body LOL.

See what happens when I talk about the fellas? I just go on and on and on. LOL!

Preachin' to the choir, girl. I could - and obviously have - go on and on too ;)

with Karl 1998

Charles is a damn fine man. I didn't really care either way for him before I met him but wow, when he was on stage doing the Q & A for the convention, I was hooked. He has this rich, deep voice and up close, those blue eyes are so lovely. I just don't know what took me so long to really love him. LOL! Maybe it was his lack of work here in the US. ;)

I might have to check out The Fighter one of these days. Hmmm...

I love my gorgeous men. I thought Karl Urban did a great job as McCoy but I'm super biased since the first thing I usually think when Karl enters a scene is "Ohhhh, he kissed me!!!" (Well, he kissed me the cheek. And then I kissed him on the cheek. He's a cheeky fella. LOL!) Ryan Gosling was another that didn't impress me much before I met him (he took over the role of Young Hercules from a different actor and I liked that actor better). In person, Ryan is a sweet charmer. At least he was when he was 18 and I don't see how that could have changed much. ;) It's actually hard for me to think of him as "hot" but after Crazy, Stupid, Love, I can totally see it now. Rarr!

Mr. Hardy
Warrior Boys

Just watched Tinker Tailor tonight. Tom was magnificent. Not recalling the character from the Alec Guiness version I watched decades ago, I certainly didn't expect such an emotional performance in the midst of all that stoic, stiff upper lipping. He managed to melt me again. Siiiiiigh ♥

I need to watch that movie again. All those lovely British gents! I adore Colin Firth (remnants from his Pride and Prejudice days) so much. Tom did a great job in that relatively small role. He is definitely magnificent...

Re: Mr. Hardy

I love Colin Firth too - in his roles and just listening to/watching him in interviews and such. Such wit!

My recording of Tinker Tailor only lasts 48 hrs so I must rewatch Tom's scenes once more tonight... to breathe in such sweet emotion before it gets deleted tomorrow ;)

I placed an order with Amazon tonight. Bought Warrior plus RocknRolla plus a few non-Tom things LOL

I think I should buy Tinker Tailor on blu-ray. It's worthy. ;)

I bought RockNRolla recently on blu-ray but have yet to watch it. Why am I waiting? I'm not sure. LOL!

I've watched our blu-ray of Warrior twice. I should watch it again soon. ;)

Re: Mr. Hardy

That Kleenex commercial is so sweet. His bit lasts only a few seconds and, as far as I know, that's all of it. In case you've never seen this clip, here is a "Behind the Scenes" for Tom's portion of the commercial.

That last image at the end melts me into a pile of goo. Yet again LOL.

Re: Mr. Hardy

I opened up the Warrior DVD I received Tuesday (hey, I resisted a whole day. Not bad LOL) and watched a lot of the extras. Loved what Gavin had to say about Tom. And about Tommy ::sigh:: Not sure if you've seen it but one of the extras goes over the choreography and story-boards for the final fight and I both LOL'd and awwwwwwed over one of the story-boards. It's actually written down that Brendan cradles Tommy at the end of the fight. Cradles!!?? Was Mr. O'Connor a fanfic writer in another life? LOL

Of course that makes me long for an actual cradling scene. What we got though was pretty special ::sigh::

Re: Mr. Hardy
Warrior Tat

Keeping in mind that Snatch is one of my all-time favorite movies, I just loved RocknRolla. And Tom was wonderful. The movie had one large, gaping plot-hole at the end which irked my hubby but I was okay with it. Knowing Guy Ritchie had intended a sequel which I'm sure would've explained the crater, I forgave him.

Back to Tom... he was much smaller here, looked almost tiny next to Gerard Butler (fun) and Idris Elba (guh), but looked great. His chemistry with them both, particularly Butler, was adorable. Actually adorable is a good way to characterize the role. He was so different here compared to what I've seen so far -- sweet and mortified and vulnerable at times, charming to outright cocky at others and, the biggest change for me (and I loved it), was the bit of playfulness the part had *g* I've only watched it the once and would definitely watch the whole movie again but first I'd likely fast-forward to just his scenes and watch them over and over ;) I haven't done that yet because I'm lazy I put Warrior back into my DVD player and have continued my new tradition of going to bed every night after watching the conclusion ::sigh:: You'd think I'd've desensitized myself to its heart by now but I haven't. It still makes me melt ♥
