John Fic Rec - "Once Upon a Time" by Irnan

I just finished reading a little oneshot over at fanfiction.net that I'd like to see get more attention.  To me, it's a nice and succinct little meta on John and the choices he was forced to make after his family was attacked.  It's a familiar "argument" for many of us John fans, but it's great to see it expressed in another venue such as fanfiction.net and by a different fic writer.

Read Irnan's "Once upon a Time"

I saw that you left her feedback. Glad you did. I'm happy to encourage anyone who is taking up the pro-John Winchester cause ;).

Hi, you! Hope you had a nice holiday. :) Thanks for the rec; it's nice to see someone point out what seems would be (to me) the natural conclusion to John being the type of father many John-haters would have him be. Yeah, the boys might have had fewer issues, Dean might have gone to college, they would have had relationships and a sense of normalcy, but Sam would be dead. Maybe all of them, given the demon's propensity for getting folks out of the way. I'm not sure I'll ever believe John was a bad father; just a desperate one. :)

Hi, as a matter of fact, my holidays was lovely - mostly nice and relaxing, which was right up my alley. How was yours?

I was pleased to see another fic writer addressing John's decisions, particularly drawing attention to what might have occurred had the boys not been so well prepared. My theory, having watched through all of seasons 1 and 2 is pretty much that Dean and/or John would both have wound up dead when Azazel came for Sam and that Sam would be leading a demon army in the destruction of humanity by now. That being the case, John not letting Sam play soccer when he asked, seems like a minor transgression ;). Alas, I know I'm pretty much preaching to the choir here, still, I like seeing another voice out there taking up the "John Winchester as a decent father" cause.

That does sound lovely - good for you! :) I wouldn't say our holiday was relaxing, LOL, but the three year-old loved Christmas this year, and we have the baby now, too, so our lives are full. :)

And yeah, not to spoil anyone, but given what we learned from Ruby in a recent episode, I'd say John had pretty good reason to believe that the killing wouldn't stop with Mary, so it baffles me when people say John should have given the boys a home in the suburbs and shouldn't have trained them, etc. Desperate times call for desperate measures. And I'll jump down from my soapbox now, LOL. Thanks again for the rec, and of course, I'm hoping you'll be writing another fic again soon, too! :)

LOL, me too! I'm completely at the mercy of my muse and have learned over the years that forcing myself to write without the benefit of a fairly clear picture given to me by inspiration/the muse/or whatever, becomes grueling for me and a potential recipe for writer's block. So, I simply have to wait until I'm struck with a sledgehammer and then I write because I can't not write.

I was really hoping that while I was off, a story would strike but nothing... nada... zilch *sigh*. Hopefully something will hit me again soon. Thanks for mentioning it though ;).
